Dr. Misael Uribe Esquivel

President of the Board of Directors


Dr. Misael Uribe Esquivel is President of the Board of Directors of Médica Sur, S.A.B. de C.V., and has been with Médica Sur for 37 years. Dr. Uribe Esquivel has been the Head of the Department of Gastroenterology of the INNSZ (Salvador Zubirán National Institute of Health Science and Nutrition). He is a graduate of the INNSZ and of the Mayo Clinic, and has a Master’s Degree from the American College of Physicians. He is a Doctor Honoris Causa of the Autonomous University of Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas and has a Doctorate of Science from the UNAM and from the IPN. Dr. Esquivel has authored 34 books on medicine and the function of medicine, as well as two books on social strategy. He is vice-president of the Mexican Health Foundation, of the Board of Directors of the INMEGEN (National Institute of Genomic Medicine), and a member of the Board of the National Cancerology Institute and of the National Rehabilitation Institute. He served as a coordinator of the National Health Institutes, Vice-President of the World Forum of Medical Academies and as president of the National Academy of Medicine. He is also emeritus researcher of the CONACYT (National Council of Science and Technology) and has published 407 international research papers. He is a member of the Academy of Medicine of Salamanca, Madrid and Barcelona.

Dr. Octavio González Chon

Chief Medical Officer


Dr. Octavio Gonzalez Chon is an Executive director of Médica Sur, S.A.B de C.V., and has been a member of the Médica Sur board of directors for 20 years. Dr. Gonzalez Chon is a specialist in internal medicine, critical care medicine, anesthesiology and cardiovascular anesthesiology. Dr. Gonzalez Chon took training in the Cleveland Clinic Hospital and in the Texas Heart Institute. He also worked for 9 years as a doctor assigned to the National Institute of Cardiology, 11 years as chief of the Coronary Unit and 3 years and 4 months as Academic Director. At the present time, Dr. Gonzalez Chon acts as Chief Medical Officer of Médica Sur.

Dr. Carlos Arellano Quintana

Chief Executive Officer


Dr. Arellano is a Surgeon from Universidad Anáhuac in Mexico City, holding a Master's degree in Administration from Boston University Questrom School of Business, specializing in Health Services Administration. Dr. Arellano has held various positions, including Regional Vice President of Operations and Vice President of Imaging and Surgical Services, both at Mass General Brigham Hospital. He has also served as Senior Director of Surgical and Radiology Services and Director of Performance Improvement for Ambulatory Services at Boston Medical Center, both institutions located in Boston, Massachusetts. In his professional career, Dr. Arellano has been responsible for managing and administering hospital operating budgets valued at $500 million, developing growth strategies, and creating patient quality and safety plans.

Ing. Juan Ahedo Rozada

Director of Finance and Administration


Engineer Ahedo holds a degree in Industrial Engineering with academic excellence from Universidad Iberoamericana, and a Master's in Business Administration from Boston College in the United States. He has a distinguished career holding senior executive positions in several companies in the financial sector, including CREZE, a financial institution specializing in SME loans, CONTIGO, focused on microfinance, and REV WORLDWIDE, dedicated to payment processing.

Engr. Juan Antonio Chavez Nieves

Director of Human Resources


Juan Antonio Chávez Nieves is a systems engineering graduate from the ITESM (Monterrey Institute of Technology). He has a Master’s degree in Business Administration from that same institute and completed a Business Management course in the IPADE Business School. He has more than 20 years of experience in Human Resources work and has been with Médica Sur for 4 years.

Dr. José Manuel Correa Rovelo

Director of Operations


Dr. José Manuel Correa is the Director of Operations at Médica Sur. He holds a degree in Human Medicine from Universidad La Salle, specializing in General Surgery and further sub-specializing in Colon and Rectal Surgery. Additionally, he has completed a diploma in Strategic Hospital Management from the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM), a diploma in Pedagogical Intervention from Universidad La Salle, and a PhD in Medical Research from Escuela Superior de Medicina, Instituto Politécnico Nacional. He is the founder and principal instructor of the General Surgery Specialization Course at Fundación Clínica Médica Sur and Universidad La Salle. Currently, he serves as the president of the Médica Sur Physicians' Society.

Lic. Concepción Guadalupe Arriaga Ruiloba

Director of Internal Communication and events


Concepción Guadalupe Arriaga Ruiloba has a degree in Marketing from the ITESM (Monterrey Institute of Tehnology), Mexico City Campus, and holds a Master’s Degree in Organizational Communications and Public Relations from the School of Marketing and Management of the University of Girona in Barcelona, Spain. She has 7 diplomas from various institutions.

Lic. Moisés Francisco José Ramos González

Legal Director


Mr. Ramos González is a lawyer, graduated from Universidad Iberoamericana, with various diplomas and courses. He has over seven years of experience managing legal and strategic project areas for Médica Sur, where he has demonstrated leadership by improving internal processes and consistently exceeding set objectives. His professional experience includes a notable tenure in the insurance sector at companies such as SOLUNION MÉXICO SEGUROS DE CRÉDITO, where he excelled in establishing a network of lawyers across Latin America.

Dr. Jaime Jacobo Arriaga Gracia

Director of Strategy, Alliances, and Outreach with Doctors and Patients


Dr. Arriaga is a graduate of the School of Medicine of the University of Nuevo Leon. He completed his studies of internal medicine in the Salvador Zubirán National Institute of Health Science and Nutrition, and his Cardiology studies in the Ignacio Chavez National Institute of Cardiology. He is the president of the Hospital Bio-Ethics Committee. Dr. Arriaga was the Director of Medicine in Médica Sur from 1996 to 2015. He was the president of the Médica Sur Society of Physicians for 2 years and a founding member and president of the Arterial Hypertension Society of Mexico. He is presently the Director of Strategy, Alliances and Outreach with Doctors and Patients.

Dra. Martha Helena Ramos Ostos

Director of Clinical Diagnostics and Imaging


Dr. Martha Helena Ramos Ostos is an Executive director of Médica Sur, S.A.B. de C.V. She received her degree as a physician and surgeon from the Autonomous University of Tamaulipas, and she completed her course of Endocrinology and Nutrition at the UNAM (National Autonomous University of Mexico). She is presently the Director of Clinical Diagnostic and Imaging Services of Médica Sur, the Head of the Eating Disorders Clinic, the Infantile Obesity Clinic, and of the Design and Technology Innovation Center (CIDandT).

Dra. Sandra María Del Carmen García López

Director of Medicine and Hospitalization


Dr. Sandra Maria del Carmen Garcia Lopez is a graduate of the Medical School of the Anahuac University – North Campus. She has a post-graduate degree in internal medicine from the ABC Medical Center, and post-graduate degrees in Clinical Cardiology and Intensive Cardiovascular Care from the Ignacio Chavez National Institute of Cardiology (Secretariat of Health). At the present time, she is the Director of Medicine and Hospitalization, but she has served in different departments of the hospital, contributing to her overall training.

Dr. Rodolfo Barragán García

Director of Surgery


Dr. Rodolfo Barragan Garcia is a graduate of the School of Medicine of the UNAM (National Autonomous University of Mexico). He has been a contributor to more than 280 national and international conferences. He was a tenured professor of the Cardiovascular Surgery Specialization Course from April of 1985 to February of 2014 in the Ignacio Chavez National Institute of Cardiology. He was also a member of the Academic Committee of Cardiovascular Surgery of the UNAM School of Medicine until 2015. He is the Founder-President and honorary member of the Mexican Society of Cardiac Surgery, a tenured member of the National Academy of Medicine, and honorary member of the Mexican Academy of Surgery. He has published more than 90 papers and chapters in books.

Dr. Victor Manuel Noffal Nuño

Subdirector of Processing Center Laboratorios Médica Sur


Dr. Noffal graduated from the Metropolitan Autonomous University (Xochimilco Unit); he holds a specialization in Clinical Pathology from Laboratorios Biomédicos (Clínica Londres) and is currently certified by the Mexican Board of Clinical Pathology. He has served as the assistant manager of the Clinical Pathology Laboratory at Médica Sur since October 2008. He acted as a council member of the Mexican Board of Clinical Pathology. An adjunct professor since 2009 and currently a full-time professor in Clinical Pathology at UNAM. Received the "Dr. Luis Guevara González" academic merit recognition awarded by Médica Sur for teaching activities as a medical specialty professor. Invited professor for the construction of the Annual Departmental Exam (PUEM) by the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) for Clinical Pathology from 2009 to 2018. Advisor for 3 postgraduate theses for the title of Medical Specialist in Clinical Pathology. Technical translation reviewer from English to Spanish for two books on Pathological Anatomy. Author or co-author of 6 articles published in national medical journals and 2 articles in international journals. A member of the Mexican Association of Clinical Pathology since 1989, where he served as president in the 1999-2000 term, and also as president of the Latin American Society of Clinical Pathology during the same period. Auditor member of the College of American Pathologists (CAP) since 2014."

Dr. Jorge Hernández Ortiz

Director of the Strategic Acquisitions Committee


Dr. Hernández is a physician and surgeon, and a graduate of the Scholl of Medicine of the Autonomous University of Guadalajara. He completed his post-graduate internal medicine studies in the Salvador Zubirán National Institute of Health Science and Nutrition and his internship in radiology in the same institute. He was also a Radiology Intern in The Graduate Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and realized his Fellowship in Angiography in the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. Dr. Hernandez is a Professor Emeritus of the Radio-Diagnostics course in Médica Sur. He was an Associate Professor in the Gastroenterology Undergraduate course in the UNAM (National Autonomous University of Mexico), and a tenured Professor in the Radio-diagnostic Specialization course of that same university, which took place in the Salvador Zubirán National Institute of Health Science and Nutrition and in Médica Sur. He acted as Medical Director in Médica Sur from 2005 to 2013, and is presently the Director of the Strategic Acquisitions Committee. He has published 74 articles in national and international medical journals, 12 chapters in national books, and has hosted 320 conferences in various medical courses. He is a member of the Association of Physicians of the Salvador Zubirán National Institute of Health Science and Nutrition, the Mexican Radiology Association, the National Academy of Medicine, and the Médica Sur Medical Association.

Lic. Blanca Payán Cerón

Commercial Director


Blanca Payán Cerón holds a degree from the Escuela Libre de Derecho in the state of Sinaloa, Mexico. She has postgraduate degrees in Business Leadership from IPADE, Managerial Skills from Tecnológico de Monterrey, and E-Powering from the University of Quebec. She holds various certifications and specialized courses in leadership, transformation, personnel management and performance, as well as programs to enhance teamwork skills. She has been collaborating with Médica Sur since 2020, having implemented the “Todos Juntos contra el COVID" program in support of patients in public health institutions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the ranking conducted by the prestigious magazine Newsweek, in collaboration with the global data platform Statista, Médica Sur has been rated as the Best Hospital in Mexico for the years 2021, 2022, and 2023, thus totaling three consecutive years. 

 

In the national ranking by Expansión and the Mexican Health Foundation, we climbed from second to first place, excelling in nine out of the fourteen evaluated specialties, all of which secured the top spot.

 

We have renewed our corporate image with a new symbol that embodies Médica Sur's values: Ethics, Professionalism, Safety, Sustainability, and Our People, placing our patients at the center of each of our actions.

We celebrate 40 years of medical excellence and human warmth

 

In June 2021, with great pride, we celebrated our 40th anniversary. Since its foundation, Médica Sur has aimed to be a private center of high specialization, where ethical medicine is practiced efficiently in terms of cost, with an academic approach, adhering to international efficiency standards and a sense of sustainability

 

In 2021, for the second consecutive year, we were ranked by Newsweek as the Best Hospital in Mexico. We obtained the first place in the Expansión ranking in six specialties; we were recognized as an Exceptional Company for the Hospital Conversion strategy, implemented in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, an award granted by the Mexican Council of Communication and the Institute for Quality Promotion.

 

We completely renovated the Magnetic Resonance area, which now includes a 1.5 Tesla high-definition Magnetom Sola Siemens scanner. Additionally, we initiated the Robotic Surgery Program with the Da Vinci robot.

 

The group invested $134.2 million pesos during the year.

We are a safe hospital


Médica Sur has national and international certifications that ensure the safety and control of infections, in strict keeping with good medical practices in our hospital. We are prepared for the treatment of patients who could be infected with COVID-19, for whom we have implemented various isolation measures and areas assigned for this eventuality, to separate them from non-COVID patients and where patients can be treated without the risk of infection.

 

We have a COVID laboratory in which we provide testing for the virus and for antibodies, as well as 10 branches for that purpose in 5 cities. We are prepared for whatever you may need when you need it, so that nothing will stop you and so that life can go on. We are ready for you!

At the beginning of the year the remodeling of seven operation rooms was completed, at a cost of more than $50 million pesos. Additionally, the latest generation of equipment for X-Ray YSIO MAX and PET CT BIOGRAPH MCT FLOW was acquired for $46.0 million pesos, and the hospital was remodeled for the greater safety and comfort of our patients and visitors. Additionally, we initiated the digital strategy of the hospital with the incorporation of Intelligent Rooms and the implementation of Digital Clinical Files, so that our doctors and health professionals can consult and interpret the patients’ charts in real time, as well as tele-medical robots for quarantined patients.

We feel proud of several important achievements: In June, Médica Sur obtained the recertification of the General Health Council, valid for 5 years, and in October Médica Sur was the highest ranked hospital in Mexico, according to the ranking of clinics and hospitals in the journal America Economia.

 

Médica Sur completed the remodeling and modernization of five floors in the hospital, which it began in 2014, incorporating the latest generation of technologies for the care and safety of patients, to thereby meet the highest worldwide hospital standards, at an accumulated cost of more than $220 million pesos between 2014 and2018.

 

At the end of 2018 Médica Sur successfully completed the first phase of the remodeling of its operating rooms, incorporating the latest generation of equipment for the benefit of our patients and doctors, at a cost of more than $30 million pesos. We must also emphasize that surgeries were not interrupted, and rather the volume of surgical activity increased by 5.4% during the year.

 

The Group operated 126 Laboratory units, which is 12.5% greater than at the end of 2017, and the strategy of expansion to other cities, such as Merida and Cancun, continued.

We obtained the tri-annual re-accreditation of the “Joint International Commission,” the principal certification agency for patient care and hospital safety practices, which certified that we adhered to the best international practices of quality and medical safety to the benefit of our patients. In May, Médica Sur reported that a private investment fund named ProActive Capital, consisting of a small group of prominent Mexican and foreign businessmen, headed by the Mr. Jose Antonio Fernandez Carbajal, had underwritten 40% of the corporate capital of Neuco, S.A.P.I, the controlling company of Médica Sur, by which ProActive thereby has an indirect stock holding of 20.04% in the capital stock of Médica Sur.

 

In December, the company carried out the allocation of the real estate next to the land presently occupied by the hospital campus, located at Puente de Piedra No. 29, Colonia Toriello Guerra, to an Administration and Guarantee Trust, so that, subject to several conditions, Médica Sur will transfer a surface area of 24,000 square meters to GSM (Grupo Sordo Madaleno). Médica Sur preserved its ownership of the other part of the real estate, equivalent to 26,704 square meters, with a construction potential of 225,000 square meters. That is, Médica Sur preserved 73.2% of the construction density, while GSM acquired the remaining 26.8%.

On October 12, 2016, the closure of the acquisition of the totality of the shares of Laboratorios Médica Sur, S.A. de C.V. (formerly Enessa Salus, S.A. de C.V.) and of Laboratorio Medico Polanco, S.A. de C.V. and subsidiaries took place. This operation valued at $1.492 billion pesos expanded the presence and the multiple clinical diagnosis services that are now provided by Médica in the Mexico City, Mexico State, Morelos, Puebla, Queretaro, Quintana Roo and Tlaxcala markets.

In September of 2015, Médica Sur and the Mayo Clinic Care Network inaugurated the CEAP (Patient Education Center), and the works for the habilitation of 30 hospitalization beds were completed. Also, the 4th floor was expanded, and the remodeling of the 8th floor was begun.

On May 10 of 2014, Médica Sur obtained the accreditation of the “Joint Commission International,” thereby joining an elite world-level group in its quality of medical treatment. Additionally, the first phase in the remodeling of the hospital was initiated, with a total investment of $180 million pesos across the next two years.

We obtained the re-certification of the General Health Council and of the College of American Pathologists. Also, Médica Sur became the first hospital outside the United States to be integrated into the Mayo Clinic Care Network.

The Group successfully carried out the placement of 5% of its Capital Stock in the Mexican Stock Market by means of an primary offering. The said offering was complemented with the participation of Nacional Financiera (Nafin) with a secondary offering of 21.4%.

The Holiday Inn Hotel began its operations (Holiday Inn franchise, presently with 55 rooms). Also, in the month of August, the acquisition of 5 hectares of land adjacent to the central campus in Tlalpan was completed.

During the second quarter, the building annex that expands the size of the hospital tower, and with it the size of the Emergency Unit, was inaugurated, allowing thereby the expansion of the installed capacity of the latter by more than 100%.

23 beds were added to the installed capacity of the hospital by habilitating the seventh floor of the hospital tower. Also, the CIF-BIOTEC (Pharmacological and Biotechnological Research Center) was inaugurated for the purpose of realizing clinical studies for the pharmaceutical industry.

The fifth and sixth floors of the hospital tower were habilitated, which implied the installation of 46 new beds. Two new general surgery rooms, one more gynecological surgery, and one more cardiovascular surgery rooms were installed.

The oncology and radio-therapy units were installed and the physical therapy and imaging areas were remodeled. Also, on November 17, the Tower II was inaugurated.

The first phase of the hospital equipage was completed, consisting in 3 operating rooms; 4 intensive therapy beds; the first hospitalization floor, with 23 beds (second floor of the tower); the emergency unit; the surgery recovery area; the support services areas (Blood Bank, Equipment and Sterilization Center; pharmacy, cafeteria, etc.).

In 1985, civil work of ten levels of the hospital building was started. The first stage concluded in 1989.

 

In November 1982, Tower I was inaugurated, with 269 medical offices, clinical laboratory areas (for general testing), imaging (x-rays and fluoro-cardiography), Clinical Diagnosis (Check-UP) Unit and physical therapy.
